We are an advocacy for dogs 7 yrs + that have been displaced into animal shelters after losing housing, through incapacity of a caretaker, becoming stray, or other circumstances out of their control.
Classic Canines was launched in Oct 2012 as a program and became it's own non-profit in 2017. Volunteers advocate for foster, adoption and rescue of more than 400 senior dogs that arrive yearly to Austin area shelters. There are no paid positions in this non-profit. Senior dogs are often overlooked in favor of younger pets and languish in no kill shelters. Our mission is to reduce stay times and stops along the way. We work to educate the public on the benefits of fostering and adopting a mature dog, getting their backstories out there, and marketing the dogs and our mission through more than 20 outreach events yearly. We sponsor medical treatment for about 15% of the dogs that need a major medical barrier removed in order to be viewed as adoptable. We also handle a small number of requests from local agencies to provide assistance to pet owners with limited resources.
